Ethics court

Fact or opinion?

The Ethics court activity is designed to encourage students to explore the validity of some common opinions about the use of contemporary scientific and technological developments relating to animals. Through video footage, they will be asked to consider some controversial statements, which pose complex ethical dilemmas. Background information can be found when they click the Consider the evidence button. This will direct them to use scientific knowledge and research in order to draw their own conclusions about each issue, after which they can hear what an RSPCA scientific officer has to say. The activity can be carried out by an individual, or in a group, and then results can be compared with those of other schools.

There are eight Ethics court topics, which each have rounds of evidence. When asked to vote at the end of a round, students may need reminding that they are giving their opinion on the case as set out by the first character in that topic.
