This Value of life group presents students with food for thought about how humans treat the animals they farm. It prompts them to think about how we value our farm animals, and how the way we value them might affect their welfare.
The list below shows the animals included in the Farm animals group, along with the numbers reared on farms each year in the UK.
- Salmon - 139,000 tonnes
- Chicken - 30 million for eggs, 830 million for meat
- Sheep - 30 million
- Cow - 10 million
- Pig - 9 million
- Turkey - 18 million
- Rabbit - 250,000 to 1 million
- Ostrich - 10,000
