Research animals

This Value of life group asks students to think about how they value some of the different animals used in research and testing. It provides occasional facts about the ways in which these animals are used, and prompts them to consider whether their use in research and testing indicates that these animals have more, or less, value to humans.

These are the animals in the Research animals group, along with the numbers of each used in research and testing in 2008 in the UK:

  • fish - 604,743
  • pig - 6,672
  • rat - 347,962
  • bird -122,265
  • dog - 4,271
  • guinea pig - 29,250
  • horse - 252
  • primate - 3,354.
