How to play Value of life
The Value of life game is easy to pick up, either by following these instructions, or by using the prompts in the activity.
- Start from the home page of the Science, ethics and animals site.
- The Value of life activity is on the bottom right in a blue square.
- Click Go at the top of the activity square.

You are now on the Value of life home page. Wait while the activity loads - the blue bar shows you how long you will have to wait.

Click the arrow beside the words Start activity.

You will be asked which of two animals you think has the most value.

If you want to understand more about the term 'value', you can click on the button at the top right of the page that says What do we mean by value? You can click on this button at any time while you are playing the game.

Click the letter beside the answer you want to make.

A new page appears. This asks you to say how many of your lower-valued animal you think would be worth the same as one of your higher-valued animal. You can either put a number in the white box, or click on the button that says I've changed my mind, if you want to go back and change your first answer. When you are ready to move on, click Okay.

You will see a visual representation of your decision. Once again, if you want to change your mind, click on the button that says I've changed my mind.

Click the Next button at the bottom right when you are ready to move on.

A new page appears. You will be asked to repeat the exercise with two different animals.

Keep playing the game with each new pair until you click Next and some text appears on the screen. Follow the instructions on the screen and click Next when you are ready.

A new page appears with more text. It should give you some food for thought.

You can change your results by clicking on the button at the bottom left that says Change my figures. Or you can go on, by clicking the bottom right button that says See more of your results.

Now you can see a visual representation of your choices.

In the box to the right, headed Thought, you can also read a fact about one of the animals you've made a decision about. It might make you think differently about how you valued it.

Click the bottom right button that says See all your results.

Now you can compare all your results. You can also see them in table form, if you click on the words Result table at the top, or in pyramid form, by clicking on the words Result pyramid at the top. Use the blue and white up and down arrows to the right to move the page so you can see all your results.

You have four options now.

Click the arrow after the words Explore further at the bottom left. This opens a new page. It tells you at the top what group of animals you have just valued, and asks you a number of thought-provoking questions. Use the blue and white up and down arrows to the right to move the page. Type your responses in the white boxes. Remember to print out your responses at the end. You can do this by clicking on the dark blue printer icon next to the red and white cross at the top right of the page. Click on the red and white cross when you have finished. This takes you back to the page with the four options.

Click the arrows after the words Try again with the same animals at the bottom. This allows you to go through the exercise with the same animals again.

Click the arrow after the words Try again with different animals at the bottom. This allows you to go through the exercise with a different group of animals.

Click the arrow after the word Finished at the bottom. This takes you out of the Value of life activity and back to its home page.
Other functions in the Value of life activity
- At the top right of the Value of life home page there are two symbols. Hover over them with your mouse and you will see the one on the left allows you to print, while the one on the right allows you to send this page to a friend.
- Below these symbols near the top of the Value of life home page there is a button that says Full screen. Click this to enlarge the page to fit your screen. Click it again to make it smaller.
- Below the Full screen button on the Value of life home page there is an effect that looks like a folded-down corner and the words Curriculum links. Click on the arrow below these words to peel back the page and see how this activity will help your learning. You can click on the bold words to link to GCSE science National Curriculum links and exam board links for the activity. To go back to the Value of life home page, click on the arrow on the fold-down corner at the bottom left of the screen.
- At the top of each Value of life round there are two buttons.
- Clicking on Home will take you back to the Value of llfe home page.
- You won't be able to click Full screen once you are viewing a Value of life round.
- At the bottom of each Value of life round there are three buttons.
- Clicking on Leave feedback allows you to tell us what you think about the Value of life activity, and/or ask us a question.
- Clicking on Teachers' resources will take you to the teachers' area of the resource, where you can find background information, ideas for student activities and GCSE science National Curriculum and exam board links.
- Clicking on Credits will take you to a page thanking those who have helped put the Value of life activity together.
